A culture of security is one which enhances an organization’s capacity to determine its interests and act on them in spite of another organization’s opposed interests. Corporate workforces and law enforcement agencies both cultivate cultures of security, as do management teams, investment rings, smugglers, unions, militia men, and academic researchers. All of these cultures are supposed to control flows of information (trade secrets, exclusive suppliers, price indexes, strategic plans, etc.) and restrict communication in furtherance of an organization’s interests.

Though the project is classified Secret, an Army contract shop in Europe posted a wealth of information on the FedBizOps contract website Tuesday. (Unsafe web page, be careful)<!–more–>The data mining contract, which has the very long title of “Social Media Data-mining, Localized Research, Market Audience Analysis, and Narrowcast Engagement Requirements,” will support both the European Command and Special Operations Command Europe.In its request for information, the Army said it wants a contractor to “provide detailed social media research and analysis, on-the-ground native research and analysis, and customized social media website development and execution.”  This will include open source information, “detailed social media data-mining, social media monitoring and analysis, target audience analysis, media kit development and social media platform operations.”

This is a global effort, according to the RFI. In addition the European Command and the Special Operations Command in Europe, “activities under this contract will support … strategic communications, operations to engage local populations, build interagency partnerships, and identify violent extremist influences” within EUCOM’s area of responsibility emanating from Africa Command, Central Command, Pacific Command, or Southern Command areas of responsibility.

Even more details are contained in a Secret work statement that I would need a decoder ring to obtain – but I consider the unclassified info on FedBizOps a real gift for my daily trolling of federal digital cupboards.

The local neighborhood watch may be beefing up its robotic arsenal if a new technology startup gets its way anytime soon.

In a bid to make local communities safer and give local law enforcement agencies more tools to fight crime, California-based Knightscope recently unveiled a line of K5 robots that it believes will “predict and prevent crime with an innovative combination of hardware, software and social engagement.”

Sa maison est un fastueux palace minimalement décoré avec deux lions de pierre à l’entrée. Après avoir sonné à sa porte pour l’alerter sur la manif, une bannière fut levée face à sa maison qui lisait: « Le futur de Google s’arrête ici » et des tracts d’information sur lui furent distribués dans le voisinage. Most of you have been following the poignant spectacle in the shape of a major clash of the titans taking « place » through the mainstream media. The new hacktivist elite, that gathered wind from the Edward Snowden affair, seems now to be into full recuperation mode, with « good cop » human rights activist-reporter Glenn Greenwald making a world tour with his secret stash of about 50 000 documents acquired from Edward Snowden. From this ongoing global intrigue of spies, hackers, cyber-activists, left-wing journalists and billionaire scum, it isn’t strange to feel somehow dispossessed, clueless, helpless about a battle that is raging high above in the clouds, among the lords the tech industry and the higher caste of the NSA. Or is it.

There’s now a build-up of evidence that this whole charade may be after all just a big stunt -at least from the Greenwald/Poitras side of things- as the thin layer of ice covering muddy waters that reek corporate collaboration with the NSA is starting to crack there and there.

Le produit capitaliste idéal dériverait sa valeur de l’incessant travail non-rémunéré de la race humaine en entier. Nous deviendrons dispensables; il deviendrait indispensable. Il intégrerait tout activité humaine en un seul champ unifié, accessible seulement par l’entremise de produits corporatifs additionnels, où les sweatshops et les marchés se fusionnent. Ça accomplirait tout cela sous la bannière de l’autonomie et de la décentralisation, même de la “démocratie directe”.

Ça ne sera pas la première fois que des dissidents ont extrapolé leur utopie de l’infrastructure de l’ordre dominant. Souvenez-vous de l’enthousiasme que Karl Marx et Ayn Rand ont partagé pour les chemins de fer! En constraste, nous croyons que la technologie produite par la compétition capitaliste tend à incarner et imposer sa logique; si on veut s’échapper de cet ordre, on ne devrait jamais prendre ses outils pour acquis. Quand on utilise des outils, ces outils nous utilisent en retour.

Contexte

Le Data Center Utah, nom de code Bumblehive, est la première « Communauté compréhensive du renseignement de l’Initiative de cyber-sécurité nationale globale » (IC CNCI), un centre de traitement de données conçu pour soutenir les efforts de la communauté du renseignement (services secrets) pour surveiller, renforcer et protéger la nation. La NSA est l’agent exécutif pour le Bureau du directeur du renseignement national ( ODNI ) et sera chef de file dans ce centre.
