Any graduate in social sciences will admit it, but we’ll save you from 30 000 – 100 000 $ in tuition fees to understand that. Manif à la maison d’un développeur de Google, et un autobus Google bloqué à Berkeley

À 7 heures ce matin, un groupe de gens se sont pointé à la maison de Anthony Levandowski, un développeur chez Google X. Sa maison est un fastueux palace minimalement décoré avec deux lions de pierre à l’entrée. Après avoir sonné à sa porte pour l’alerter sur la manif, une bannière fut levée face à sa maison qui lisait: « Le futur de Google s’arrête ici » et des tracts d’information sur lui furent distribués dans le voisinage. Ces tracts décrivaient son travail avec l’industrie de la défense et ses plans de développer des condos de luxe à Berkeley. Version originale du tract

Most of you have been following the poignant spectacle in the shape of a major clash of the titans taking « place » through the mainstream media. The new hacktivist elite, that gathered wind from the Edward Snowden affair, seems now to be into full recuperation mode, with « good cop » human rights activist-reporter Glenn Greenwald making a world tour with his secret stash of about 50 000 documents acquired from Edward Snowden. From this ongoing global intrigue of spies, hackers, cyber-activists, left-wing journalists and billionaire scum, it isn’t strange to feel somehow dispossessed, clueless, helpless about a battle that is raging high above in the clouds, among the lords the tech industry and the higher caste of the NSA. Or is it.

There’s now a build-up of evidence that this whole charade may be after all just a big stunt -at least from the Greenwald/Poitras side of things- as the thin layer of ice covering muddy waters that reek corporate collaboration with the NSA is starting to crack there and there.

Le produit capitaliste idéal dériverait sa valeur de l’incessant travail non-rémunéré de la race humaine en entier. Nous deviendrons dispensables; il deviendrait indispensable. Il intégrerait tout activité humaine en un seul champ unifié, accessible seulement par l’entremise de produits corporatifs additionnels, où les sweatshops et les marchés se fusionnent. Ça accomplirait tout cela sous la bannière de l’autonomie et de la décentralisation, même de la “démocratie directe”.

Sûrement que si un tel produit aurait été inventé, des anti-capitalistes bien pensants clâmeraient que le royaume des cieux est proche; il ne resterait qu’à soustraire le capitalisme de l’équation. Une hymne pour les bouffeurs de lotus.

Ça ne sera pas la première fois que des dissidents ont extrapolé leur utopie de l’infrastructure de l’ordre dominant. Souvenez-vous de l’enthousiasme que Karl Marx et Ayn Rand ont partagé pour les chemins de fer! En constraste, nous croyons que la technologie produite par la compétition capitaliste tend à incarner et imposer sa logique; si on veut s’échapper de cet ordre, on ne devrait jamais prendre ses outils pour acquis. Quand on utilise des outils, ces outils nous utilisent en retour.

12.16.13 – San Francisco has always been a city of symbols. The Golden Gate Bridge, peace signs, the rainbow flag. These days, nothing seems to represent San Francisco’s tech-fueled boom times better than those giant private shuttles that drive tech workers from the city to Silicon Valley. For some city residents, the shuttles are about as welcome as a computer virus.
