At night, around campfires under a New Brunswick sky, Ambrose Williams thought about imminent battles back home.
Last November, the young Vancouver man and nine others travelled more than 5,000 kilometres east to the town of Rexton. Their mission was to reinforce the Mi’kmaq of the Elsipogtog First Nation who had clashed the month before with the RCMP. The confrontation happened on October 17, 2013, when heavily armed police dismantled a highway blockade by Natives opposing a gas-exploration project.

TERRITOIRE DE LA CÔTE SALISH – Des activistes ont bloqué l’accès au port fédéral de Vancouver pendant une heure tôt ce matin, s’inscrivant dans la Journée international d’actions de support aux défenseurs de la terre d’Elsipogtog du Nouveau-Brunswick.
L’accès au Port au pied de Clark Drive a été bloqué pendant une heure. La queue de trafic bloqué s’est étendue à perte de vue. La coalition ad hoc d’activistes a bloqué la route avec une bannière lisant « Solidarité avec Elsipogtog » et #ShutDownCanada. Le groupe a dit qu’il condamne le fracturation hydraulique pour son empoisonnement de l’eau et multiplication des émissions d’hydrocarbures et dénonce « la brualité de la réaction de la GRC et leur continuelle collusion avec les intérêts corporatif ».
On se tient en solidarité avec les Défenseurs de la terre de partout – des Mi’kmaq au Nouveau Brunswick jusqu’aux Unis’tot’en en Colombie Brittanique – qui se battent contre la rampante et inconsciente extraction des ressources, qui est le visage du colonialisme moderne. On dénonce l’idée que cette destruction et cette corruption, violence et déception par association sont nécessaires. Et aujourd’hui nous fermons une pièce-clé de l’infrastructure de cette machine idéologique. »
Le camp du territoire Mi’kmakh, qui a vu des confrontations entre les Mi’kmaks protègeant les eaux et la GRC protégeant les intérêts corporatifs, a fait appel à un support mondial. D’autres actions de support ont été prévues aujourd’hui en Colombie Brittanique, incluant des manifs à Vancouver et Victoria.
